My Journey with Woolf: How a Remote Degree Helped Me Build a Career in Software

I’m Brian Etemesi, a software engineerbased in Nairobi, Kenya. I currently work in the fintech space, building corebanking solutions for financial institutions. But I didn’t start out in tech,my first degree was actually in International Relations.

After discovering a passion forsoftware, I completed a certification with ALX. I knew I wanted to take thingsfurther, so I decided to earn a recognized Computer Science degree throughWoolf. It was an easy decision. Woolf offered an accredited program, acceptedcredit transfers, and allowed me to study remotely while continuing to work andlive in Nairobi.

Woolf was more than just a place togain technical skills and earn a degree. It broadened my perspective, strengthened my communication, and gave me a level of confidence I hadn’texperienced before.

One moment that stands out for me wasa team challenge organized by Kibo, the Woolf college I studied under. I didn’tthink I had done anything special, and I honestly doubted whether I’d succeed. But I kept showing up. In the end, I came out on top. That experience taught mesomething I now live by: showing up consistently opens doors.

My classmates had a big impact on meas well. I was especially inspired by the Nigerian students. They were bold, ambitious, and incredibly driven. Watching them pursue opportunities withconfidence made me ask myself, “What’s stopping me from doing the same?”

Today, I’m proud to be working in techin a role I wouldn’t have landed without pursuing my degree through Woolf. Iplan to keep this momentum going and hopefully continue my journey with aMaster’s degree through Woolf. The experience so far has been incrediblyrewarding.

If you’re thinking about joiningWoolf, here’s my advice: go for it. The flexibility, the global community, thequality of learning, it’s all delivered in a way that helps you grow and reachyour goals.
